PSA: As of November 1, 2019 there is no longer an amnesty period for tickets relating to peeling NYS license plates. If your license plate is peeling, you must get replacement license plates from the DMV to avoid a ticket. There is no cost/fee to get replacement license plates at the DMV.
You can also call the Custom Plate Unit at 518-402-4838 and they will send you replacement plates!
If you are purchasing a vehicle from a Dealership and your license plates are peeling, is better to be issue new license plates rather than transfer to avoid you being stopped for peeling license plates. Alternatively, customers can turn in peeling plates to the NYS DMV for replacements at no cost.
NOTE: If you wish to keep the same license plate number, you will have to go through the DMV and there will be a $20 processing charge at the DMV to keep the same number
